Broken wheat upma is a healthy and tasty breakfast rich in fiber. It can be prepared easily in a pressure cooker. The texture can be adjusted to preference by varying the amount of water added. Vegetables like carrot, beans, and green peas can be included. This recipe uses only carrot.
Ingredients
- 1cupbroken wheat
- 1pieceonion
- 2piecegreen chilly
- 1inginger
- 1piececarrot
- 1sprigcurry leaves
- 1/2tspmustard
- 2tbspoil
- salt to taste
How to make Broken Wheat Upma
Wash the wheat and soak it for 20 minutes. Drain well.
Heat 1 tbsp oil in a pan and roast the wheat for 3 minutes.
Put a pressure cooker on the stove and add the roasted wheat. Add 1 1/2 cups of water and salt.
Close the lid and cook until 3 whistles on medium flame.
When the pressure is completely gone, open the lid.
Heat a kadai and add 1 tbsp of oil. Add ginger pieces, green chilly, carrot, curry leaves, and sliced onion. Sauté until transparent.
Add the cooked wheat to this mixture and mix well. Switch off the flame.
Tips & Tricks
Adjust the water quantity to achieve the desired texture of the upma.
You can add other vegetables like beans and green peas for variation.
Goes well with pickle, coconut chutney or sambar
