How to make Extreme Hawaiian Chicken Sandwich

Prepare Ingredients

  1. Step 1

Fry bacon until done, then turn heat down to low. Remove bacon and cover.

  2. Step 2

Place Hawaiian rolls underside down in the pan for several seconds until golden brown, then remove.

  3. Step 3

Make the cheese spread by combining cream cheese, pepper jack, and feta until smooth. Cover and refrigerate until ready to assemble the sandwich.

  4. Step 4

Combine flour, salt, and pepper in a bowl. Coat onion strings in the flour mixture, dip them in whisked eggs, and toss them in the flour mixture again.

  5. Step 5

Preheat oil to 350°F and fry onion strings until golden brown. Drain on paper towels.

Grill Chicken and Pineapple

  1. Step 1

Preheat the grill for at least 10-15 minutes.

  2. Step 2

Sprinkle chicken breasts with salt and pepper, brush with olive oil, and place on the prepared grill along with pineapple slices.

  3. Step 3

Turn chicken after 5 minutes and brush with Stubbs BBQ Sauce. Turn again after 5-7 minutes, ensuring grill marks are visible, and brush with Stubbs sauce again.

  4. Step 4

Grill for another 5 minutes and remove from heat. Cover with aluminum foil to keep warm.

Assemble Sandwich

  1. Step 1

Layer the bottom bun with whipped cheese, grilled chicken, bacon, Stubbs BBQ Sauce, grilled pineapple, and fried onion strings.

  2. Step 2

Repeat the layering process for a double-decker sandwich if desired.

Tips & Tricks

  1. Use thick chicken breasts and slice them horizontally to create cutlets for even grilling.

  2. Brown Hawaiian buns in the same pan used for frying bacon to enhance flavor.

  3. Ensure grill marks are visible on the chicken before turning for the best presentation.

  4. Prepare the cheese spread ahead of time to save time during assembly.

FAQS

  1. Can I use a gas grill instead of charcoal?

Yes, a gas grill works perfectly fine, but charcoal adds a distinct smoky flavor to the food.

  2. What can I use as a substitute for Stubbs Sweet Honey & Spice BBQ Sauce?

You can use any sweet and slightly spicy BBQ sauce as a substitute.

  3. Can I make this sandwich without a grill?

Yes, you can cook the chicken and pineapple on a stovetop grill pan or bake them in the oven.

  4. How can I make the onion strings crispier?

Ensure the oil is preheated to 350°F and avoid overcrowding the pan while frying.

  5. Can I use a different type of bun?

Yes, you can use any burger bun, but Hawaiian buns add a unique sweetness to the sandwich.
