How to make Easy Puff Pastry Spirals

Preparation

  1. Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a sheet pan with parchment paper.

  2. In a small bowl, combine 4 tablespoons of butter, granulated sugar, cinnamon, and salt. Set aside.

  3. Unfold the thawed puff pastry and roll it into a rectangular shape with the long side facing you.

  4. Spread the filling on one half of the pastry using the back of a spoon.

  5. Fold the plain half of the pastry over the filled half and lightly roll over it with a rolling pin.

  6. Cut the pastry into 5 even strips. Then cut each strip in half lengthwise.

  7. Twist the two lengths of each strip together and roll up the twist into a spiral, tucking the end underneath. Place on the prepared sheet pan.

  8. Melt the remaining 2 tablespoons of butter and brush over the tops of the pastries. Sprinkle with cinnamon sugar.

  9. Bake for 10-15 minutes until golden brown. Transfer to a wire rack to cool using a cookie spatula. Serve warm or at room temperature.

  2. These puff pastry spirals are best enjoyed fresh but can be stored in an airtight container for a day or two.

FAQS

  1. What is the best way to store leftover puff pastry spirals?

To store leftover puff pastry spirals, let them cool completely, then place them in an airtight container. They can be kept at room temperature for up to 2 days. For longer storage, consider refrigerating them for up to a week or freezing them for up to 3 months. To reheat, simply pop them in the oven at 350°F (175°C) for a few minutes until warmed through.

  2. Can I make puff pastry spirals ahead of time and freeze them?

Yes, you can prepare the puff pastry spirals ahead of time and freeze them before baking. After shaping the spirals, place them on a baking sheet and freeze until solid. Then transfer them to a freezer-safe bag or container. When you're ready to bake, simply preheat the oven and bake from frozen, adding a few extra minutes to the baking time.

  3. What are some good substitutions for the ingredients in puff pastry spirals?

If you need to make substitutions for the puff pastry spirals, you can use margarine instead of butter for a dairy-free option. For the filling, consider using brown sugar instead of granulated sugar for a deeper flavor, or try adding chopped nuts or raisins for extra texture. If you want a different flavor, you can replace cinnamon with nutmeg or pumpkin spice.

  4. What can I serve with puff pastry spirals for a dessert platter?

Puff pastry spirals pair wonderfully with a variety of desserts. Consider serving them alongside fresh fruit, such as berries or sliced apples, for a refreshing contrast. You can also serve them with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a drizzle of chocolate sauce for an indulgent treat. A dollop of whipped cream or a side of caramel sauce can also enhance the flavors.

  5. Are puff pastry spirals suitable for a vegan diet?

Traditional puff pastry spirals are not suitable for a vegan diet due to the use of butter. However, you can make a vegan version by using a plant-based butter substitute and ensuring that the puff pastry you choose is vegan-friendly. Additionally, you can replace the granulated sugar with a vegan sugar alternative to keep the recipe fully plant-based.
