Ingredients

  • 1piece
    Raw banana (nethrakkaya)
  • 1piece
    Yam (small piece)
  • 1/4cup
    Toor dal
  • 1cup
    Grated coconut
  • 1/2tsp
    Cumin seeds
  • 3piece
    Shallots
  • 1/2tsp
    Turmeric powder
  • 1 1/2tsp
    Chilli powder
  • 1/2tsp
    Pepper powder
  • 2tbsp
    Coconut oil
  • 1tbsp
    Mustard seeds
  • 3piece
    Dry red chilli
  • 2sprig
    Curry leaves
  • Salt to taste

How to make Raw Banana - Yam Erissery / Chena - Kaya Erissery

  1. To a pressure cooker, add Toor dal, raw banana pieces, yam pieces, and turmeric powder.

  2. Add enough water for cooking.

  3. Cook until it's completely cooked.

  4. When the pressure is completely released, open the lid.

  5. Slightly mash the mixture with a masher.

  6. Add chilli powder, pepper powder, and salt.

  7. Add 1/2 cup grated coconut along with cumin seeds and shallots to a mixer jar. Coarsely grind without adding water.

  8. Add this to the mashed banana and yam mix and mix well.

  9. Turn on the flame. When it starts bubbling, turn off the flame and keep aside.

  10. In another pan, heat oil. When the oil becomes hot, add mustard seeds and dry chilli.

  11. Add the remaining 1/2 cup grated coconut.

  12. Fry until the coconut becomes golden brown, then add curry leaves and mix.

  13. Turn off the flame.

  14. Add this fried coconut to the already prepared mashed banana-yam mix and mix well.

  15. The tasty raw banana-yam erissery is ready to serve.

Tips & Tricks

  1. Ensure the yam and banana are cooked thoroughly before mashing.

  2. Adjust the amount of chilli powder to suit your spice preference.

  3. Do not mash well.
