A traditional spicy fish curry from Kerala, India, made with coconut oil and aromatic spices.

Ingredients

4 Servings
(1 serving = 125g of fish curry)

Main Ingredients

  • 1/2kg
    fish
  • 15g
    kukam star
  • 500mL
    hot water
  • 2 1/2tsp
    salt
  • 3tbsp
    coconut oil
  • 1/2tsp
    mustard seeds
  • 1/4tsp
    fenugreek seeds
  • 2in
    ginger
  • 10clove
    garlic
  • 15piece
    shallots
  • 1/2tsp
    turmeric powder
  • 2tbsp
    chilli powder
  • 1tbsp
    Kashmiri chilli powder
  • 3sprig
    curry leaves

How to make Kerala Style Fish Curry

Preparation

  1. Soak the kukum star in hot water and set aside.

  2. Clean and cut the fish into pieces.

Cooking

  1. Heat coconut oil in a pan and add mustard seeds. Allow them to splutter.

  2. Add fenugreek seeds, ginger, garlic, and shallots. Sauté until the shallots turn golden brown.

  3. Add turmeric powder, chilli powder, and Kashmiri chilli powder. Mix well.

  4. Pour in the soaked kukum star along with the water and bring to a boil.

  5. Add the fish pieces and salt. Cook until the fish is done.

  6. Add curry leaves and simmer for a few more minutes.

Tips & Tricks

  1. For a richer flavor, use fresh coconut oil.

  2. Adjust the amount of chilli powder to suit your spice preference.
