A versatile and delicious whole wheat bread recipe that can be made in a slow cooker.

  • 1/2cup
    warm water
  • 2cups
    warm milk
  • 2tbsp
    melted unsalted butter
  • 1tbsp
  • 3tbsp
    active dry yeast
  • 6cups
    whole wheat flour
  • 2tsp
  • 1tsp
    baking powder

How to make Literally The Best Bread Recipe Ever (Adapted)

  1. In a large bowl, stir the warm water, sugar, and yeast. Wait for 5 minutes until it becomes frothy on top.

  2. While waiting, warm the milk and butter in the microwave.

  3. Add the milk and butter to the yeast mixture.

  4. Using a standing mixer, slowly add the flour, salt, and baking powder. Mix and knead the dough.

  5. Once most of the flour is incorporated, use a dough hook to knead for about 5 minutes, then knead by hand for another 5-7 minutes.

  6. Line your slow cooker with baking paper and place the dough inside.

  7. Cook on high power for 2-2.5 hours, checking every 7-10 minutes until the top is spongy but springs back and no moisture is on the top. The bottom and sides should be a nice brown color.

  8. Optionally, place the loaf in the oven on boil/grill for less than 5 minutes to get a crusty top.

Tips & Tricks

  1. Use unsalted butter or adjust the extra salt added.

  2. Add more sugar if you want a sweeter bread.

  3. If you are not skilled at kneading, try a 50:50 ratio of whole wheat flour and all-purpose flour to avoid a dense loaf.

  4. Make sure the bread is completely cooked through; it may take up to 2.5 hours.

  5. You can use a tea towel on top to avoid condensation dripping onto the loaf.
