FAQS

  1. How do I make Mandazi from scratch?

To make Mandazi from scratch, start by mixing 4 cups of all-purpose flour, 1 tbsp of baking powder, 2 tbsp of sugar, and 0.25 tsp of salt in a bowl. Rub in 1 tbsp of salted butter until crumbly. Then, add 1 large egg and 351 mL of warm water, mixing until a dough forms. Knead for 4-5 minutes, cover, and let it rest for 1-2 hours before shaping and frying.

  2. Can I make Mandazi without eggs for a vegan option?

Yes, you can make a vegan version of Mandazi by substituting the egg with a flaxseed meal or chia seed gel. Mix 1 tbsp of flaxseed meal or chia seeds with 3 tbsp of water and let it sit for a few minutes until it thickens. This will help bind the dough while keeping it egg-free.

  3. What is the best way to store leftover Mandazi?

To store leftover Mandazi, let them cool completely, then place them in an airtight container. They can be kept at room temperature for up to 2 days or refrigerated for up to a week. For longer storage, consider freezing them; just make sure to wrap them tightly to prevent freezer burn.

  4. What can I serve with Mandazi for breakfast?

Mandazi pairs wonderfully with hot tea, but you can also serve it with a variety of accompaniments such as honey, jam, or fresh fruit. For a heartier breakfast, consider serving it alongside eggs or a yogurt dip.

  5. What oil is best for deep frying Mandazi?

For deep frying Mandazi, it's best to use oils with a high smoke point, such as vegetable oil, canola oil, or peanut oil. These oils will help achieve that perfect golden brown color and crispy texture without burning.
