Shan Recipes

Shan cuisine originates from the Shan State highlands of eastern Myanmar, reflecting the cultural connections between the Shan people and neighboring Thai, Lao, and Yunnanese communities. Lighter and less oily than Bamar cooking, Shan food emphasizes fresh herbs, fermented soybean paste (tua nao), sticky rice, and milder seasonings. The cuisine is known for its noodle dishes, tofu made from chickpeas, and use of tomatoes and dried chili flakes. Signature dishes include shan noodles (shan khao swe), tohu thoke (Shan tofu salad), meeshay (rice noodles with pork sauce), and nam ngiao (spicy tomato noodle soup).
