Durban Indian Recipes

Durban Indian cuisine is the product of South Africa's large Indian diaspora, descended from indentured laborers who arrived in KwaZulu-Natal from the 1860s onward. Bunny chow — a hollowed-out bread loaf filled with fiery curry — is Durban's globally famous contribution to gastronomy. The cuisine features intensely spiced curries, sugar bean curry, rotis, samoosas, and the distinctive "mother-in-law" chili relish. Durban's Indian markets and beachfront food stalls serve some of the spiciest food in Africa. This culinary tradition represents a unique South African-Indian identity found nowhere else in the world.
