Cherokee Recipes

Cherokee cuisine draws from the abundant forests, rivers, and fertile lands of the southeastern United States. Corn is central, used in hominy, cornbread, and the traditional drink gv-no-he-nv (a corn beverage). Wild game including venison, turkey, and rabbit supplemented the diet, along with beans, squash, ramps, and wild greens. Kanuchi, a soup made from hickory nuts, is a distinctive Cherokee preparation. Bean bread and succotash remain cherished dishes.
