Buganda Recipes

Buganda cuisine from Uganda's largest kingdom in the central Lake Victoria region is the most elaborate and ceremonial of Ugandan culinary traditions. Luwombo, steamed banana-leaf parcels of chicken, beef, or mushrooms in rich groundnut sauce, was created for the Kabaka (king) and remains the pinnacle of Buganda cooking. Matooke (steamed and mashed green bananas) is the essential staple, accompanied by a variety of sauces and relishes. The Baganda people are also known for their distinctive use of ssenga (sauce) preparations, roasted coffee, and the banana-based beverage tonto.
