Lindokuhle Mfana, or kwadlangamandla has been creating waves in the Instagram food community with her delicious culinary creations. Hailing from Johannesburg, Lindokuhle Mfana is a renowned food content creator with thousands of followers and over a hundred recipes. Behind this successful food content creator is the story of a young girl who loved cooking.
Born and raised in the North West of South Africa, Lindokuhle was 12 years old when she first started cooking. She could barely handle a knife back then. Her first meal was rice and chicken stew, but the rice turned out to be overcooked, and the chicken stew was a watery mess. However, these setbacks fell short in front of Lindokuhle’s desire to cook. This undying yearning led to a routine. Every day after school, she would head to the kitchen to try different recipes.
When school ended, and it was time to decide on a stream, Lindokuhle’s initial pick was law. This surprised her mother, who could tell how much her daughter loved cooking. Her mother asked Lindokuhle the question that changed her life — “ Why would you want to go into law when you love cooking?”
This question became the catalyst for Lindokuhle’s journey. Once she saw the obvious choice, she realised there were no other options. Cooking was her call! Lindokuhle enrolled herself in a culinary school and never looked back.
Lindokuhle has her personal army of critics back home. Her family members are big foodies and are generally the first people to judge new recipes that she tries.
One of Lindokuhle’s proudest achievements was being selected as a contestant on the popular cooking show Ready, Steady, Cook on the SABC3 channel. The show's format was simple: you cook with some celebrity chefs, and then you can invite a friend to compete with you. Lindokuhle invited her friend from TikTok to join her. The contestants were given 20 minutes to cook. Lindokuhle opted to cook pork chops with apple sauce alongside a Waldorf salad and poached pear.

“Baking is my worst nightmare!” Lindokuhle is a sweet-toothed chef who prefers cooking savoury recipes over sweet ones. She found baking to be challenging and restricting, and it's this lack of freedom over her own food that makes her prefer cooking savoury.
Mfana has a substantial following on social media, where she shares her recipes and food content. We asked her how she was handling the fame, “I never, ever thought that one day people from outside of South Africa would be seeing my content, engaging with it and enjoying it. So it's been, it's so amazing. And it's surreal at the same time. It's like, I can't believe it. And it's exciting. Seeing how far your work reaches is exciting, and I love seeing people enjoy it.”
Lindokuhle starts with a vision in mind. A certain way she wants her video to look. Once she decides upon the vision, she starts working on the script. When asked how she chooses what to work on next, she told us she simply lets the world around her guide her. She draws inspiration from the ingredients lying about, the trends going around and the random ideas that pass by her. She doesn’t try to control her cooking process much. It’s when she gets to editing, she tries to figure out a way to play around with it and make it look and feel a certain way. Lindokuhle loves giving traditional South African dishes a modern twist, and she often tries experimenting with that.

Lindokuhle loves to cook loaded couscous with lamb chops and a pomegranate glaze. It’s her favourite dish, and she has not been able to get it off her mind since she tried it.
Mfana is an empath who loves getting inspiration from those around her. She often goes restaurant hopping with her family, a ritual very sacred to her as a food lover and a family person. If a dish captures her interest there, she comes home to research it and recreate it with her unique spin on it.
“Be yourself,” says Lindokuhle.
She further advised always keeping something to remind yourself why you started—something that will keep you grounded, and that will keep you going when the going does get tough. This is because she believes it's so easy to forget when you achieve one goal. You're so focused on the next one that you don't even get to celebrate that moment when you finally reach where you dreamed of being.
“So always celebrate your wins, no matter how small they may seem. It is a big deal, and you should make a big deal out of it.”
Lindokuhle aspires to work in the cruise kitchen industry. Despite its difficult and hectic nature, she wants to try it out because she believes it offers valuable learning opportunities and a chance to meet people from different walks of life.
Currently, she is actively working on entering the culinary industry and gaining experience by working in restaurants and kitchens abroad.
As far as the future is concerned, she plans on returning to her home once she is satisfied with what she has learned and invests her time in creating content around it. She even talks about a foreseeable future, where she sees herself running pop-up restaurants. She mentioned that she doesn’t see herself “owning a place.”

“It's quite a lot of work, and I can't commit to one area. So maybe like pop-up restaurants, around the country and maybe even globally one day, who knows,”
While she has some plans for herself, Lindokuhle wants to experiment with her passion instead of boxing herself into a place, cuisine, or style. Apart from cooking, she is really fond of content creation and social media and plans to continue creating content despite wherever life takes her. She also loves teaching people how to cook and plans on passing on her knowledge once she thinks she is ready.
Lindokuhle Mfana’s journey is one of self-realisation and resilience. Today, she impacts thousands of lives, one recipe at a time. Her journey from humble beginnings to global ambitions is a testament to the power of perseverance and the transformative magic of good food.
