Foodwati, or Shreya Das, has been stirring the Instagram food community with her uniquely creative food series. Hailing from the flavour centre–Kolkata, Shreya started her journey as a food creator a mere eight months ago. Today, she has a thousand followers and has brought a tangible change in many lives through her easy and quick recipes for corporate workers.
Born in Kolkata, Shreya’s earliest memories are etched with watching renowned chef Sanjeev Kapoor’s Khana Khazana. Her mother was a big fan of the kitchen maestro and often replicated his simple and brilliant recipes at home.
Shreya loved eating good food. Eventually, she and her mother became companions in watching food shows together. Shows like Masterchef and Khana Khazana gave this mother-daughter duo plenty of time to bond and enjoy.
Despite being a big foodie and a watch-along partner for her mother, Shreya was kept away from the kitchen. Her excitement to experiment made her mother skeptical about letting Shreya in. But a few years back, when the first wave of COVID hit, both of Shreya’s parents got down with it.
This is when Shreya cooked for the very first time. She soon realised how therapeutic she found it. She recalled cooking Chicken Bharta. Although the cooking process of this dish was lengthy, she managed to power through it.
Despite creating a big mess in the kitchen, the dish became an instant hit with her parents. Shreya has never looked back since.
In 2024, Shreya got her master's certificate and joined the corporate world. Almost instantly, she realised it was difficult to cook after returning from a day’s work, even for someone like her who loves cooking. This struggle served as a catalyst for the inception of “Majdoor Meals”, a series of easy-to-cook recipes for working individuals, who she playfully referred to as “Majdoor”.
Born and raised in Kolkata, Shreya is a big fan of the city’s food culture.
“People often say Delhi has the best food in India, but Kolkata certainly gives it fierce competition.”
Shreya revealed that Kolkata has a huge influence on her cooking. Ever since she arrived in Mumbai, a hint of Maharashtrian cuisine has also sneaked into her cooking style. She discovered Konkan Masala, a spice mix popular in Maharashtrian cuisine, and it has been a permanent resident of her kitchen ever since.
The Mumbai staple Vada Pao, along with Pav Bhaji and Misal Pav stole this Kolkata Girl’s heart in a beat. Although it couldn't shake her love for the sweets of Kolkata.

“Coming from Kolkata, I can’t deny that. I definitely love sweets,”
Besides her newfound love for Konkan spice mix, Shreya loves using curd in her recipes.
“Curd is one such thing that you can literally pair up with anything. I think most of my recipes do have curd in them somehow. Shreya appreciates the versatility that curd brings. It can be so many things, from being used as a dip to a marinating base for baking.”
We asked Shreya what was her process of coming up with recipes,
“My process is a blend of methodology and intuition. Somedays, I research and create a recipe. On other days, I have a feeling that I follow until something edible comes up.”
Foodwati has seen fantastic growth since beginning her journey as a food creator. Within less than eight months of debuting, she has gained a large base of loyal followers. We asked her the secret ingredient of her success; she told us it was her passion for food.
“I think one thing that really worked out for me was my passion for food. For any aspiring creator, I believe you need to be absolutely passionate about what you’re doing. Content creation thrives on creativity, and you simply can’t be creative about something you’re not passionate about. So I think to sustain in the long run, one needs to be really passionate, consistent, and loyal about what they're doing.”
The results of her dedication are evident. In July 2024, Shreya restarted her Instagram page with only 200 followers. Today, her follower count is over 86,000 and growing.
“This journey has been unbelievable. The support from my followers through Majdoor Meals, Swaad Anusar, and my other series has been incredible. I did not expect it when I started out back in July. It really motivates me to ensure each video is better than the last, and I’m truly grateful for it all.”
Shreya shared the challenges of juggling her full-time job with content creation. “Coming home after a 10-hour shift and finding the energy to create is difficult. But cooking has always been like a therapy or an escape for me, which is why I can do it that well. That, combined with my passion for content creation, I think that has led me here today. ”

Shreya has plans lined up for Foodwati in 2025. Apart from posting easy recipes, she also plans on sharing informative content about food, food spot recommendations across India, and cooking tips and tricks.
“I don’t want to be restricted to being a recipe creator, I view myself as a Food Content creator instead of a recipe creator.”
Shreya plans to expand Foodwati to go beyond Instagram eventually and share videos on YouTube, Facebook and similar platforms. But she is in no rush and wants to take her time. Once this plan is completed, we will see Foodwati as a full-time creator.
Her journey is one of passion and perseverance, and for Shreya Das, this is just the beginning. Foodwati is now ready to fully embrace the flavours of life.
