We recently had the pleasure of meeting Alex, the owner of Kangaroo Island Stall at the Adelaide Central Market. As we chatted, we were intrigued by the story behind the stall and the man himself. Born and raised in Adelaide, Alex’s parents owned businesses in the market and arcade, back in the '70s and '80s. Alex pretty much grew up in the market, it was his second home. They eventually sold their company to move. This is when Alex tried working for a corporation. It didn’t take Alex long to realize that his heart belonged in the market. He quit his corporate job and came back. Now, he is based in Adelaide and frequently travels back and forth to Kangaroo Island. Alex opened up his stall in Adelaide Central market. His stall– Kangaroo Island Stall is a one-stop destination that brings the island’s finest offerings to the mainland. He has built this amazing place, where people can find anything and everything from Kangaroo Island.

“Kangaroo island is quite unique,” Alex said,” It's one of the most pristine environments on earth. Its untainted landscape, there is no commercialism on the island. If you were to go to Queensland, you would see as far as I can see, just hotels along that coastline forever. But not here. They refuse commercialism. It’s a paradise.”

Alex loves to visit Kangaroo islands often. He goes there to meet with the producers of his stocks. He revealed he loved the serene environment there and truly looks forward to these conversations over there. It gives him a chance to understand his curation better. Alex also loves to visit because now, after years of working together, these producers have become his friends as well. So whenever Alex gets time, he spends it with his Kangaroo island producers.

Alex thought of sharing produce from Kangaroo Island as he knew the quality these products held.

Alex revealed that Kangaroo Island is a large island and it has a lot of production going on. From vineyards, to honey, to lavender, the island has a huge production.

Alex wanted to bring all the variety of products from Kangaroo Island to be sold from one place. That was the initial idea.

Alex’s stall is not just about fresh produce; it’s also home to one of the most talked-about gin experiences in Adelaide. He is passionate about Gin and has quite the knowledge about this drink. His bar is legendary among locals and tourists alike. The bar displays an array of Gin varieties that Alex himself has curated quite mindfully over the years.

The secret behind the wine of Kangaroo Island

Alex explained the rich quality of Kangaroo Island comes from its unique weather conditions. The island is close to the mainland but it's still surrounded by the ocean, so it's a temperate climate. This is why they don’t get extremely cold days, or hot days, because the ocean regulates the weather quite well. This is also why vineyards of Kangaroo Island produce such a beautiful blend of wines. This is why the wine coming out of Kangaroo Island has delicate, beautiful flavours, without the harsh taste in them.
